Fikaride isn’t the only way to ride for free. MyWhoosh offers free-to-play cycling with workouts and live events in an installed app. Fikaride offers browser riding with nearby live riders, scheduled virtual riders and local pacers. Start with the kind of ride you want, then check that your equipment works. MyWhoosh access, features

I make Fikaride. I’d like you to ride it. But “this one is free” doesn’t settle a comparison when the other one is too.

What do you want to do when you get on the bike?

If it’s a race or an organised event with other people, look at MyWhoosh. Fikaride now has live multiplayer, alongside scheduled virtual riders and local pacers. You can see nearby people in the same room, but there’s no friend picker, organised event system or live racing yet.

If you mostly want a route and a reason to keep pedalling, try Fikaride. Open the game, choose a ride and see whether you like it. You can save a guest ride in the browser and download it afterwards. There’s a workout library when you want a session, and imports for .zwo, .erg and .mrc files when you already have one.

MyWhoosh also offers routes, training and community riding. You don’t have to race there either. The difference isn’t “serious cyclists over here, everyone else over there.” It’s what you want from tonight’s ride. MyWhoosh features

There is a small-print bit about workouts

MyWhoosh’s own library workouts don’t use slot credits when you use them unchanged. Creating custom workouts and training plans uses a limited free allocation, available after email verification. A subscription adds more credits. Library workouts, free slots, subscriptions

If you use the library, that distinction may barely matter. If you build lots of sessions, check the current allowance before moving everything over. Free riding doesn’t mean unlimited custom workout storage.

Fikaride’s imported workouts stay in the browser where you imported them. Keep the original files somewhere you can find them again. It’s useful to have your workout next month even if you’ve cleared your browser in the meantime.

Fikaride also has paid ways to support the build. Browser riding is free right now; the desktop edition and its access terms are still being worked out.

Try your computer before buying a different one

A free app gets expensive quite quickly if it sends you shopping for a new computer.

MyWhoosh publishes separate requirements for its regular and HD versions. The regular Windows minimum lists 8 GB RAM and 8 GB storage; Apple TV support starts at Apple TV 4K second generation, from 2021. Check the row for your exact device and app version. Current requirements

Fikaride runs in a browser, but the browser still has a 3D world to draw. I’m not claiming it’s faster than MyWhoosh or needs less memory. You can open the demo on the machine next to your bike before connecting your trainer. There’s also a write-up of the recent rendering improvements, with the limits of those measurements.

And check the trainer separately

MyWhoosh’s recommended equipment includes KICKR CORE, Tacx NEO 2T and Elite Direto models. That list belongs to MyWhoosh; it isn’t a Fikaride compatibility list. Recommended equipment

Fikaride currently reads power from Bluetooth FTMS trainers. It doesn’t take direct ANT+, standalone power-meter input or speed-sensor input. I have a KICKR CORE, which is the trainer I’ve tested. Current virtual shifting, controller and heart-rate support still needs broader physical testing. Fikaride device guidance

If you have a basic trainer and a speed sensor, MyWhoosh advertises a free-ride mode for that setup. It estimates power from speed. That’s worth investigating before buying a smart trainer just to try another app. Speed-sensor mode

Questions

Is MyWhoosh just a trial?

Its cycling app is described as free-to-play, rather than a timed riding trial. Custom workout and plan creation have the separate terms described above. Neither app’s current offer tells you what its pricing will be forever.

Can any working setup enter a race?

Check the event. MyWhoosh publishes requirements during registration, and getting into a free ride doesn’t settle race eligibility. Event requirements

Can I bring my training history to Fikaride?

Workout-file imports bring instructions for a session, not another app’s account or race history. There isn’t a MyWhoosh account-migration promise here.

If a browser ride sounds like what you need, ride now. If you’re still looking around, the app guide also covers Zwift and ROUVY.
